Hamis’ home was raided the night of January 2, 2004, by the U.S. Army, according to Abu Siffa residents, the same day that Captain Eric Paliwoda was killed at his post by a mortar attack. Residents reported that during this raid soldiers said they would make their land “look like the moon” if any more attacks came from that area.
