Lt. Col. Nathan Sassaman, quarterback of the 1984 Army football team, commanded the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, headquartered at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Paliwoda, outside the town of Balad, 50 miles north of Baghdad. Here, he talks with three local sheiks, or tribal leaders outside the main gate.
